Bam

( Dec. 30th, 2003 12:30 am)
For the benefit of any historians who manage to string these bits together from some unexpected archive, there was an earthquake in the Iranian city of Bam last Friday. The numbers of the dead keep rising; the worst estimates currently top 40,000. But even as shell-shocked people are burying their families in trenches, details about a sick cow are eclipsing the news from Iran. The number I was looking for was much harder to find. A caption on a Reuters photo claimed that 2,000 had been pulled from their crumbled homes alive. I'm grateful that the rescue efforts had that much luck, anyway. Interesting how little play the good news gets.

My little problems, which mostly have to do with wondering how I got to be this old so suddenly, I can live with. I might even have a hamburger.
